As a non-profit organization, the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter relies on the involvement of volunteers to succeed in its mission. The goal of the volunteer program is to support the mission of the shelter and to offer opportunities for the community. A FEW OF OUR CURRENT VOLUNTEER NEEDS:
office supportOffice volunteers commit to one day per week, for a total of four hours, during regular business hours (9-4). Office volunteers answer phones, greet community members, take information on people looking for beds or assistance, and much more!

Recycle volunteerWe are in the process of forming a recycling program at MMHS. We need a volunteer willing and able to transport recyclables to Waterville's recycling plant once a week at your convenience.

Meal Preparation and planningMeals cooked on site or in your home or church for 40-50 people are needed. There are opportunities for any day of the week, with breakfast needs from 6:00AM-6:30AM and dinner served at 6:00PM. Prepared food can be donated, or, if you are interested in cooking, we have an industrial sized kitchen and food supplies that can be used here at the shelter!

EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRYThe Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter's food pantry is available to community members every Friday from 1:00PM-3:00PM. Volunteers come early, starting at 12:30 and ending at 3:30, checking in visitors, completing paperwork, and filling bags with food for the weekend.

CHILD CARE AND CHILD ENRICHMENTVolunteers provide childcare during the day so guests may attend various enrichment classes and programs. Volunteers do 1-2 hours weekly, as needed. Please contact us to find out more!

TUTORINGThose with a college level education are needed to assist our students. We have guests pursuing GEDs or taking adult education classes, guests and Youth Empowerment Supports residents in college, and children in high-school and elementary school that need YOUR help succeeding. Volunteers with a high-school level education may also be able to tutor elementary school aged children.

HOSPITALITY ATTENDANTThe volunteers assist staff in helping new guests get settled in, and help to make guest feel welcome and secure in their new temporary home. Volunteers may also help with laundry, room set-up and general tasks needed to support the guests and staff, as well as play card games with the guests to help them relax as they settle in if they desire. Our needs in this area are from

BUILDING CLEANING AND MAINTENANCEWe have house cleaning too! Volunteers can help during the daytime, when shelter guests have left for the day, with general cleaning and upkeep of our facility. Those with maintenance skills may also be able to do more technical jobs, such as changing light bulbs, fixing and replacing door knobs and locks etc.
